Portugal Experience 2027

Roots, Wine, and Wonder: Portugal Awaits

About this Experience

Portugal stops you in your tracks. It's the light, golden and warm on tiled facades and ancient cobblestones. It's a warm pastel de nata from a bakery that's been baking them since 1837. It's standing at the westernmost edge of Europe, the Atlantic stretching endlessly before you.

But Portugal is more than its postcards. It's the Cape Verdean grandmother in Mouraria whose cachupa has fed the neighborhood for decades. It's kizomba drifting from a doorway on Green Street, a rhythm born in Angola that now belongs to Lisbon as much as fado does.

This is a trip for people who want both: the iconic and the overlooked, the Portugal everyone sees and the Portugal that stays with you.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Lisbon

Welcome to Lisbon. Check in, settle in, and let the city come to you. Wander the medieval lanes of Alfama at your own pace before joining your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner, your first taste of Portugal and the people you'll be sharing this journey with. Tonight is just the beginning.

Day 2 - Flavors of the City

Your morning is your own. Sleep in, explore the neighborhood, find a café and settle into the rhythm of the city. In the afternoon, we meet our guides for the AfroFlavors food tour, an immersive journey through Lisbon's most vibrant and culturally rich neighborhoods. We will eat our way through kitchens rooted in Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Brazil and more, tasting food that tells the story of a city shaped by the world. This is Lisbon beyond the postcard: alive, diverse, and delicious. The tour ends on Green Street, where the evening is yours to continue exploring.

Day 3 - Sintra & the Edge of the Continent

Today we leave the city behind.A short drive brings us to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage town of fairy-tale palaces, misty hilltops, and ancient forests that feel like they belong in another world. We continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, where dramatic Atlantic cliffs meet an endless ocean sky. Stand at the edge of the continent and take it all in. Lunch in Sintra village before heading back to Lisbon for a free evening.

Day 4 - A Taste of Tradition

This morning we trade sightseeing for flour, butter, and custard. We head to Nat'elier for a hands-on pastel de nata masterclass. From laminating the pastry dough to filling and baking, you make them from scratch and eat them warm. It is one of those simple experiences that stays with you. The afternoon is yours. Wander to Belém, browse the markets at LX Factory, climb to a miradouro for one final view over the city and the river, or simply sit somewhere beautiful with a glass of wine.

Day 5 - Onward to Porto

We leave Lisbon this morning and head north to Porto via a scenic train — a city of steep streets, river light, and some of the best food and wine in Portugal. After arriving and settling in, we cross the iconic Dom Luís bridge on foot to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the historic port wine cellars line the waterfront. We will visit Porto's great lodges, learn how port is made, and enjoy a few glasses.

Day 6 - From Vine to Glass, Where Port Wine was Born

Today we leave Porto behind for one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The Douro Valley is where port wine was born, a dramatic river gorge lined with vineyards that seem to cascade down the hillsides to the water's edge. We spend the day here fully: visiting two family-run wineries, sitting down to a long Portuguese lunch with wine pairings, and gliding through the valley on river cruise. This is Portugal at its most breathtaking.

Day 7 - Porto's Hidden History

We come full circle this morning. Reconnecting with what we began in Lisbon, we walk Porto's streets with a native dedicated to uncovering the city's hidden stories. We visit landmarks shaped by the Black community, explore the African influences woven into the city's history and culture, and hear stories of colonialism, migration, and resilience told by someone who knows them intimately. This experience reframes everything you've seen on this trip and leaves you seeing Portugal with new eyes.

Day 8 - Homeward Bound

It's time to head home, but not the same way you arrived. You leave with a full stomach, a deeper understanding of a remarkable place, and the kind of memories that don't fade.
